Gastric Cancer/Tumours
Gastric cancer management involves a multidisciplinary approach that includes surgery and often chemotherapy by a medical oncologist. The treatment depends on the stage of the disease and the patient's overall health. There are other lesions and growths of the stomach that can cause problems, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumours. These can causing bleeding, as well as blockages. Depending on the location and size, a reconstructive surgery may be required.
Achalasia
Achalasia is a rare disorder that affects the oesophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Patients with achalasia have difficulty swallowing due to the muscles of the lower oesophageal sphincter failing to relax and open properly. This makes food and liquids difficult to pass into the stomach. Furthermore, the whole oesophagus may fail to work properly, which can cause poor quality of life.
Ulcers
Gastrointestinal ulcers are a condition that can cause discomfort and pain. They occur when the lining the stomach or small intestine is damaged, often due to the presence of a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori or prolonged use of certain medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Treatment options include medication, lifestyle changes (e.g. smoking cessation), and in some, surgery. Perforations can happen which results in emergency surgery.
