Sleeve Gastrectomy
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss surgery that involves removal of a portion of the stomach to significantly reduce its size. This procedure limits the amount of food that can be consumed, leading to weight loss. There are also hormonal effects that will suppress hunger. It is typically for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher, or BMI of 30 or higher with obesity-related health conditions. As with surgery, there are risks and potential complications, so it's important to discuss the procedure thoroughly with a qualified healthcare provider.
Approximately 16-18,000 cases are performed in Australia each year (Medicare; Item number 31575).
Gastric Bypass
Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a weight loss procedure that involves dividing the stomach to create a small stomach (gastric) pouch and joining a part of small intestine to it.
There are two main types of gastric bypass surgery: Single anastomosis ("Mini") and Roux-en-y gastric bypass. Single anastomosis gastric bypass involves creating a single connection between the small stomach pouch and the small intestine, while Roux-en-y gastric bypass involves creating two connections (one at the small stomach pouch and another further downstream connecting the small bowel to another small bowel).
Both procedures can be very effective in helping patients achieve significant weight loss and improve their overall health. It's important to discuss the risks and benefits of each procedure with a qualified healthcare provider to determine which option is best for you.
Gastric bypass surgery is considered the "stronger" and more "durable" weight loss procedure, with associated risks.
Revisional Surgeries
Weight loss surgery can be a life changing procedure for many people, but it's important to be aware of the potential problems that may arise. In some cases, revisional ("re-do") surgeries may be necessary to address issues such as weight regain, reflux, and hiatus hernia. It is important to work closely with your healthcare provider to ensure the best possible outcome and minimise the risk of complications.
Intragastric Balloon
Intragastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure that involves placing a deflated balloon in the stomach and then filling it with a solution. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold, leading to a feeling of fullness and reduced appetite. The procedure is temporary. It is a safe and effective option for those who have struggled with weight loss through traditional methods.
The expected weight loss is around 10-15% of excess body weight. A tailored program is crucial for ongoing weight loss.

Medications
There are various medications available for weight loss. The recently popularised medications such as Semaglutide (Ozempic) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) work by suppressing appetite and helping the body burn fat more efficiently. However, it's important to note that these medications should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional and as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan that includes healthy diet and exercise.

Dietetics
Dietician reviews are crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and achieving weight loss goals. They provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of different diets and help individuals make informed decisions about their food choices. Regularly seeking the guidance of a dietician and taking their advice into account, individuals can stay on track towards their health and wellness goals.
